Week Four Homework : Revised

Today, 5a and 5c were asked to work on 4.1 and 4.2 on pages 47 and 48, respectively. Please do all!!

5c has an additional assignment: Room measuring. Find three rooms in your house and measure them in feet and feet fractions. I am not interested in inches, but in seeing you work with fractions. So, 10 ft. 6 in. becomes 10 and 1/2 feet, for the purposes of the exercise. Measure length and width of each room and make a scale drawing, using 1/2 inch equal to one foot. Find the area of each room, clearly demonstrating your ability to multiply with fractions.

Last week 5a had additional work, so it's only fair!

If you find you are still having trouble adding/subtracting or multiplying/dividing fractions, you need to review what we have done. Look for problems you can do in the workbook, try them, and then check your answer against the key.

Extra help at lunchtime on Monday, 9/22

I will be at the reception area (Ortega street entrance) at 12:10 (lunch time) on Monday for any students who are looking for extra help. If you received less than a 5 on last week's quiz, you might want to join us!

Homework, Week Three

You were all given back last week's quizzes. Next week, please hand back corrected quizzes.

Section 2.12 , rows 1-3 and 5-7. Please, as we discussed in class, use your answer key to check that you are doing these correctly. Show all work.

Measuring Assignment

This is an experimental exercise. Not all 5eme classes were given this assignment yet! If your class got it, it is due next week.

Using feet and fractions of feet measure the length and width of three things:

your room, your bed, and your desk. Try to include a fraction of a foot if possible, instead of inches for a little fraction practice.

Now, draw each of these three objects to scale, using 1/2 inch = 1 foot as your scale, or an appropriate scale, if that doesn't work for you.

Find the area of each object, using your skills in multiplying fractions!

Remember the shopping centers you did in 5th grade. This is just a quick review of similar concepts, with a focus on using fractions.

Homework, Week One

1.5: row 1
1.6: rows 1 (both pages, so there are actually 2 row 1's)
1.7: probs. 1-3
p. 12 probs. 7-9
2.4: rows, 1 & 4
2.5: row 1
2.6: row 1
2.7: all
2.8 row 1
2.9: row 1
2.10: rows 1 and 2
2.11: rows 1 and 2

For Sections 2.10 and 2.11, be extra careful to review the example on the right side of the page. When you have a mixed numeral you will need to convert it to an improper fraction before you can go on.

Vocabulary list: Please define the following terms: Whole number, Integer, Factor, Multiple, GCF, LCM, Mixed numeral, Improper Fraction, and Fraction in Simplest Form. Please show examples. The vocabulary list should be filed in your binder under vocabulary. It is your list to learn from, so make sure you really understand the definitions and examples. Don't just copy off something without understanding it!

Be ready to answer questions about when we use the GCF and LCM. HINT:I'm thinking about knowing which one we use to reduce a fraction to its simplest form and which one we use for finding common denominators. Be really clear about how to find them!!
